Duncombe Cemetery is the only cemetery available in Ferryhill for burials. Ferryhill Town Council has been providing the facility for over 100 years and is currently in the process of substantially improving and extending the area.
Land adjacent to Duncombe Cemetery was purchased by Ferryhill Town Council in 2002 to create an extension to the existing cemetery.
The last few years has seen Duncombe Cemetery benefit from funding grants in excess of £100,000. £74,000 alone was awarded by the Countryside Agency and Lafarge Aggregates to enable Ferryhill Town Council to develop a much sought after Memorial Garden for the Town.
Complete with high surrounding walls, to define the garden area, the Memorial Garden incorporates a central grassed area with planted borders, including scented flowerbeds, marble seating, ornamental water feature with fountain and polished, granite wall tablets complete with plaques of remembrance, which families can purchase.
Now complete, Ferryhill Town Council would like to invite anyone interested in purchasing a plaque of remembrance, at Duncombe Memorial Garden, to contact the Town Hall to make arrangements.
Plaques are available at a cost of £170 plus VAT which includes inscription. To download an application form <<click here>>.
Families can also purchase granite benches to go in the Memorial Garden with an epitaph of remembrance for £520 plus VAT and inscription.
Also recently completed is the new Ashes Garden within the cemetery, plots within the ashes garden can be purchased as single plots for caskets of ashes. Once a casket of ashes has been buried in the ashes garden a granite plaque can be purchased from a local Stonemason which must sit on top of the plot and be flat to the ground. For prices for the ashes garden please follow the link below to the burial fees & charges.
For further details about the proposed developments at Duncombe Cemetery, or to purchase a plaque of remembrance, please contact Ferryhill Town Council on 01740 652157.
Plans to convert the former chapel building at the cemetery into a Heritage Centre are also well underway. Two Heritage Centre Exhibition days have been held in the Chapel to gauge the level of demand for a permanent Heritage Centre in the Town. Both events proved hugely popular with over two hundred people attending each day. The Town Council and Ferryhill History Society are still keen to hear people’s views on the proposal to develop a permanent Centre. A survey requesting people’s views was created and completed by over 150 residents. To view the results of the Heritage Centre questionnaire <<click here>>.
Additional grants secured have also seen a new car park and footpath link to the Carrs Nature Reserve which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest be developed.
Duncombe Cemetery is one of five sites owned by Ferryhill Town Council to be awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award. The Cemetery has retained this award for four consecutive years now.
