Mainsforth Sports Complex
Portfolio Holder - Councillor Duncan Harrison
Mainsforth Sports Complex is situated on the eastern edge of Ferryhill on the site of the former Mainsforth Colliery. Ferryhill Town Council secured ownership of the site in 2001 but has been responsible for its maintenance since as far back as 1974.
In excess of £150,000 in grant money has been secured since 2001 by the Town Council to enable the Complex to be completely transformed. Recent improvements include the installation of a new electronic scoreboard for the cricketers using the site, a new public toilet amenity, the planting of a hedge and installation of new fencing to screen of the polytunnel area, planting of additional trees and bulbs to improve the aesthetic appearance of the site and improvements to the bowling green.
With the welcome addition of a well supported and active ‘Friends’ group, who are working in close partnership with Ferryhill Town Council to continuously improve the site, it is envisaged that plans to develop a new Cricket Pavilion for use by cricketers, cyclists and footballers using the Complex and plans for a cycletrack on land adjoining the site will soon be brought to fruition.
Members of the public and the various groups, who use the Complex, including Durham Bowls Association, Durham County Cricket Under 18’s as well as local football club, West Cornforth Over 40’s continuously praise the facilities available at Mainsforth. In 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 the Complex was rewarded by being chosen Best Sports Ground at the Northumbria in Bloom Awards, as well as picking up RHS Gold Awards in each of these years. In 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 Mainsforth Sports Complex was also awarded the prestigious Green Flag Status, which Ferryhill Town Council are committed to maintaining in future years.
