Surtees Doorstep Green

Having successfully secured funds in past years to transform the Surtees Doorstep Green which was previously an empty field, Ferryhill Town Council is now working in close partnership with the Friends of Surtees Doorstep Green group which comprises residents, representatives from the local school, residents groups, Youth Council and local Councils to revisit the site, with the intention of building on what has already been achieved.  Through a programme of community consultation including carrying out user surveys on the site, it is the intention to come up with an action plan for the Doorstep Green.

Already working together to try and alleviate the problems associated with dog fouling on the site it is intended that together funding applications will be sought to try and revamp the site and in particular the play areas, replacing existing play equipment with more modern and challenging equipment.

An outdoor fitness area has been recently installed at the Surtees Doorstep Green, the Fitness Area which comprises six pieces of gym equipment including a double rowing machine, exercise bike and air skier was paid for with grant funding secured by Ferryhill Town Council from the Big Lottery Fund, and installed by professional company, Fresh Air Fitness.

The grant which will also enable a small celebration event to be organised on the site later in the year is part of a number of externally funded improvements which have been made to the Surtees Doorstep Green in recent months.  The planting of wildflower seeds and plugs and installation of bird, bat and hedgehog boxes together with the installation of an interpretation panel on site were funded through a grant secured from Lafarge Aggregates & Concrete UK.
